How to deal with a car accident in the moments after the crash

Quick: what would you do immediately after a car accident? How would you act? In the moment, would you have a plan for how to deal with the chaos that ensues after a wreck?

It may seem like there is an easy way to respond to this scenario, but the truth is that even people who have been in an accident before finding themselves a bit shocked and “out of it” in the wake of a car accident. It is also very easy to succumb to our anger and frustration in the moments after a crash. While it may feel good to get that anger out, it is unlikely to actually help with the crash aftermath.

So that’s the first tip about dealing with a car accident. Stay calm. Getting angry will only exacerbate the already-tense situation. After that, you should check on the other people involved in the crash. Provide medical support if necessary and call 911 if a medical emergency is ongoing.

If all is well enough, you can use the moments after the crash to get the contact and insurance information of the other driver involved in the crash. You can also take photos of the accident scene and talk to witnesses if there were any. See if they are willing to go on the record with their eyewitness account.

If you are considering litigation in the wake of the accident, then talk with an experienced personal injury attorney as soon as possible.
